The people in the first set of photos tend to have a genuine and sincere smile. The happiness that comes from these people often has a very positive impact on our perception, which is why we tend to notice the smile first rather than other characteristics such as age or origin difference.
Conversely, the people in the second set of photos tend to smile in a much less sincere way. For some of them, the smile is strained, even forced. The difference on our perception is striking as we feel almost a little uneasy. Here again, it is the type of smile that will hold our attention rather than the difference in age or origin.
We invite you to think about the impact that a genuine or forced smile can have on you. Similarly, be aware of the impact you can have on others when you smile. Knowing that social biases naturally lead us to smile less at people who are the target of our prejudices, think about the type of perceptions you may cause in others.
So this week, focus on smiling at everyone, especially when you’re talking to people who might be the target of your biases.
